What to do if you smell gas at home in Dubai

Gas leaks are emergencies. Here is what to do — and what not to do — to keep everyone safe until the professionals arrive.

A gas leak is an emergency. Your priority is to get everyone to safety — not to find or fix the leak.

Do this immediately

  1. Do not switch lights, appliances or any electrical devices on or off — switches can spark.
  2. Do not use flames, lighters or smoke.
  3. If it is safe and quick to do so, open windows and doors to ventilate.
  4. If you know where it is and can reach it safely, turn off the gas supply valve.
  5. Leave the property and keep others away.
  6. From a safe distance, call Civil Defence on 997, and inform your building security or gas supplier.

Do not

  • Do not try to locate the leak yourself
  • Do not re-enter until the authorities or your gas supplier confirm it is safe
  • Do not use your mobile phone right next to the source — move away first

After the emergency

Once the gas supplier or authorities have made the installation safe, any repairs to gas pipework or appliances must be carried out by the appropriately approved gas contractor. AL-SAFFAT can help with related non-gas works, such as electrical safety checks or making good after repairs.

Other emergencies

  • Electrical fire: never use water. If safe, switch off the main breaker, leave and call 997.
  • Severe flooding: keep clear of electrical fittings, isolate the water supply if safe, and contact DEWA on 991 or emergency services.
